Gilda’s Club is offering a free residential (overnight), in-person camp experience for children and teens (entering grades 4-9) impacted by cancer, a news release says.
This is a collaborative camp partnership with Gilda’s Club Quad Cities, Camp Shalom and Genesis Cancer Care Institute.
The Camp Genesis application is now open. Applications are due May 17. An application and Youth Participant form must completed for the application to be considered. The application can be completed entirely online.

Priority will be given to first-time campers and those with a loved one in active treatment. A selection committee will determine camper eligibility and families will be notified by the week of May 2024.
Camp Genesis is free to children impacted by cancer thanks to the support of Genesis Cancer Care Institute through funding from Genesis Foundation. This includes a free week of residential (overnight) camp at Camp Shalom in Maquoketa, where campers can get to know other kids impacted by cancer while also having fun with activities like archery, canoeing, rope courses, campfire circles, camp songs, swimming, and more.
Camp Genesis also includes group activities with Gilda’s Club Quad Cities staff to talk about cancer and emotions as well as a day trip to Genesis Cancer Care Institute. This day trip includes a hands-on tour of the hospital, where campers get to meet with doctors and staff and see everything involved in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, as well as ask questions in a safe environment. This experience helps to make the cancer journey less frightening, the release says.
Parents will be assured their child is in a safe environment, building relationships with other campers who are going through similar situations.
