Tempers flare at court; woman at heart of firestorm safe, JCSD says
•
A verbal altercation erupted on the steps of Jones County Justice Court Friday as attorneys representing Kaileigh Schmidt addressed reporters about charges filed against her. The charges were dropped Thursday; the protester, who was identified as a cousin to Schmidt, said Judge Carlos Moore from Grenada and Javaron Buckley from Chicago were holding the press conference for political purposes. The attorneys said the press conference was to call attention to an arrest they call unconstitutional.
Kaileigh Schmidt was arrested Wednesday and charged with posting messages with intent to cause injury, which were reduced and then dropped. She had published multiple screenshots on Facebook of racist texts she alleged were from her father and step-mother. That caused an uproar and incited threats against the family members.
The woman wearing a pink T-shirt on the right is Chantelle Dunn, Schmidt's biological mother.
Carlos Moore of Grenada faces reporters and a family member of Kaileigh Schmidt’s.
